A picture book and a book of poems were released Monday in Japan and Indonesia by victims of the earthquake and tsunami off Sumatra to mark the first anniversary of the disaster.
The books are the work of children and poets in Aceh Province, a special territory on the northern tip of Sumatra that suffered some of the worst damage in the Indian Ocean earthquake that left more than 230,000 people dead or missing.
The picture book, titled "Nyawoung," meaning "life" in the Aceh dialect, is a collection of works by primary and middle school students. Forty poets contributed a total of 173 poems for the poetry anthology, which is titled "Lagu Kelu." Lagu kelu is a type of Indonesian poetry of lamentation.
The pictures in "Nyawoung" are the 20 prizewinning works in a competition held by local newspaper Serambi Indonesia in April and May. Employees of the newspaper visited evacuation centers, handing out drawing paper and paints to children there and asking them to paint what they remembered about the tsunami.
One picture vividly shows people being washed away by the giant tsunami. The artwork for the book's cover was donated by professional artist Mahdi Abdullah, 45, who lost his four family members in the tsunami.
The poetry book project was launched by 44-year-old Doel C.P. Allisah, a leading writer in Aceh, who proposed compiling the first anthology of works by Aceh poets. Among the 40 contributors, eight died or were lost in the earthquake and the ensuing tsunami. Many of the poems in the anthology express a longing for freedom and fears for the future. Under the former dictatorial government, their publication would have been impossible.
The publication of the books was partly funded by Japan Aceh Net, a Tokyo-based organization founded by journalist Seiichi Okawa, 53, and others in January.
One thousand copies of each book were printed, and 500 copies of each will be distributed to educational institutions and evacuation centers in Aceh. In Japan, they are sold at the Indonesia Bunkakyu gallery in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo. The picture book, which comes with a Japanese translation, is priced at 1,500 yen and the poetry book at 3,000 yen.
